John Lennon quotes, miscellaneous

John Lennon was notorious for getting plastered and saying all kinds of things. Once he and George were at the London Palladium for a big retrospective of show business, and Judy Garland was performing. Lennon had way too much to drink and started shouting loudly “Judy Garbage” to the horrified audience. He even repeated his insults to her at a show in New York, and then she died in 1966 of alcohol and drug overdose complications.

Later, Lennon and his drinking buddy at the time attended the Smothers Brothers comeback show in Los Angeles in 1974. He was extremely drunk and shouted insults at the brothers, disrupting the show, and ruining their comeback, though he later apolgized.

A tape of Lennon talking about Dylan included insulting comments about the song “Serve Yourself,” Lennon asked if he was a waiter, or something. He later went on to call Paul Simon a “singing dwarf.”

I heard a radio show with John Lennon singing a song ridiculing Dylan, and then it followed with a quote by Dylan, who simple said “Lennon was a man to look up to.”

I saw this quote online, it’s pretty good:

A hippie is someone who looks like Tarzan, walks like Jane and smells like Cheetah.

Ronald Reagan

Another one is from Mark Twain, who said “Wagner’s music is better than it sounds.”

It’s interesting how both Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd complained about being in the shadow of the Big Three: Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who, with some justification, if you look at their massive record sales and influence on other bands.

“We’re not ignored by the “Guinness Book of Records”, but we’ve been largely ignored by the media during our lifetime. If you read any article, no mention is ever made of Pink Floyd. We’re never included in the same sentences as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who.

— Roger Waters, Pink Floyd
